Level set Functions

Hello, Every one.

I was working with level set functions in crack propagation problem and I have noticed a strange thing.

The crack is represented as zero level set function.the normal level set functions are represented as circles in the figure and tangential level set functions are represented as squares. and if I use the condition for crack tip element as

min(xhi)*max(xhi)<0 & min(phi)*max(phi)<=   ..........Element is tip element

so according to this condition there are two elements that are designated as tip element.

Could any one tell please where is the mistake or what is the reason of this strange behavior.

Many Thanks in advance

Hiya,

Indeed, this criterion is not sufficient, as you can see from your well-chosen example! You can use the orientation criterion, and you can also write me an email, I can send you a MATLAB code for XFEM, which can perhaps help you. You can also decide to join computational_mechanics_discussion group  on google, where this type of problem is discussed daily. :)

I would also check the recent paper by Marc Duflot on the representation of cracks by level sets.

Cheers!
