3D modelling of welding

hello,

I want to simulate the welding simulation found in manufacturing of welded pipe of big diameters. The thick plates are rolled to desired diameters and then they are welded from inside and outside in that joining point. So i want to ask if the finite element software like ABAQUS and ANSYS can support this kind of simulation or not??

I dont know about ANSYS but this simulation can be surely done in ABAQUS. In welding, not only surface heat but also body heat is added.  This can be done in ABAQUS. If I am not wrong, you will be requiring a heat source with Gaussian distribution at the same time body heat source(volumetric heat). Heat addition by surface and body heat can be modeled by user subroutine "DFLUX". Also its essential to take account of material addition. Addition of elements into solution domain can be done by command

                              *MODEL CHANGE, ADD, TYPE=ELEMENT

I hope this will give you an idea, how welding can be modeled.

Best of luck!!!
