University Professorship for Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics at TU Darmstadt, Germany

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt seeks candidates at the earliest possible date for a Full University Professorship (W3) for Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics. We are looking for a scientist with an international reputation and visibility who will represent the field of numerical methods in fluid mechanics in research and teaching.

 

The research focus of the professorship should cover the development of numerically efficient, highly accurate or structure-preserving spatial and temporal discretization methods for stationary or transient fluid mechanical problems, as well as their use for practical engineering applications.

In this context, the professorship should also address at least one of the following topic areas:

  • Consideration of coupled or multiphysical phenomena, such as aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, high-speed flows, shock waves, thermofluidics, fluid-structure interactions, reactive flows, multiphase flows, processes involving phase transformations, or soft and biomaterials.
  • Implementation of numerical methods in efficient codes and on highly parallelized computer architectures such as HPC or GPU clusters, or in the future also quantum computers.
  • Linking CFD with physics- or data-based model reduction methods (e.g. in conjunction with machine learning), shape or topology optimization, quantification of uncertainties, or integration into digital twins and process chains.

The willingness to cooperate nationally and internationally and to work interdisciplinary both within the department and with other departments and research institutions is expected.

The professorship will also represent the field of numerical methods in fluid mechanics in teaching and will also participate in comprehensive courses of the department. The willingness and ability to teach courses in German or English language is required.

 

Candidates are expected to have completed an engineering, mathematical, or science degree with a subsequent qualified doctorate, internationally visible research achievements, habilitation or habilitation-equivalent (postdoctoral) accomplishments, experience in obtaining third-party funding, didactic and pedagogical suitability, leadership skills, and the willingness to participate in academic self-administration. Experience in the development of numerical methods and their use to solve fluid mechanical problems with a strong connection to engineering science should be proven through high-ranking publications.
