5 Lectureships and 5 Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships -national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS)

5 Lectureships and 5 Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships in the EPSRC funded national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS)

Lectureships: £32,795 to £41,545

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships: £25,888 to £31,840 Further salary award due 1st October 2008

School of Engineering Sciences

Applications are invited for 10 appointments in a new national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS) funded by EPSRC, 25 industrial partners and the University of Southampton through an EPSRC Science and Innovation Award. nCATS is being established at the University of Southampton during 2008, within the School of Engineering Sciences in collaboration with the Schools of; Electronics and Computer Science, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Medicine and the Statistical Sciences Research Institute. The University is in the top ten of UK research led Universities for both research quality and research income.

Tribology is the interdisciplinary science and technology of all interacting surfaces and interfaces in relative motion and is immensely important to the successful operation of engineered machines and natural mechanisms of all scales. Tribology is core to future transport and energy efficient machines, the health and quality of life of patients, the control of emissions and lower maintenance costs. nCATS will provide the next generation underpinning technology of surfaces in relative motion within Microsystems, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering and Engineering Chemistry. It will link world class research groups in key disciplines at the University of Southampton to enhance capabilities in advanced computational and experimental tribology. The national centre will be focused towards, and have strong links with industry and pursue an active technology transfer agenda.  The 10 appointees will develop and manage the multi-disciplinary research between the seven collaborating schools. nCATS staff will have access to facilities as well as mentoring from senior staff from within these schools.

5 Lectureships are currently available from the following areas:

·               Advanced tribological coatings (Ref: 2227-08-E)

·               Biomedical and orthopaedic tribology (2225-08-E)

·               Environmentally friendly tribochemistry (2222-08-E)

·               Nanotribology (2228-08-E)

·               Mathematical modelling of wear (2230-08-E)

·               Microbial tribology (2223-08-E)

·               Multi-physics and multi-scale Modelling (2229-08-E)

·               Polymer tribology (2220-08-E)

·               Statistical methods (2224-08E)

5 Post-doctoral Research Fellowships are currently available within the following areas, or from any tibological background: Ref for all below areas: 2231-08-E

·               Advanced statistical modelling and design of experiments

·               MEMS sensors for life prediction

·               Modelling lubricant performance

·               Self-repairing surfaces

·               Sensors for lubricant condition

·               Smart bearings

·               Smart tribological coatings

For the Lectureships, you should have a growing international research reputation, an excellent research background in a field related to tribology or interfacial engineering/science with proven ability to win research income and an excellent publication record. For the Research Fellowships, you will require a good research background with a publication record.

These appointments will be supported by 22 industrially funded PhD and 2 EngD studentships as well as newly equipped laboratories within nCATS.  nCATS represents an outstanding and unique opportunity to be part of building a world class research centre, supported by multidisciplinary collaborations that connect with fundamental understanding of tribological systems and with the future health care demands and industrial needs. For more information on the national Centre for Advanced Tribology and for informal enquires on any of the above posts, please visit www.soton.ac.uk/ses/research/nCATS

All posts are available from 1 October 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter.  Interviews are planned for 30 June to 18 July 2008. For job descriptions on each post and to formally apply on-line please visit www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. Alternatively please call 023 80 592750. Please quote the relevant reference number as listed above. The closing date for all applications is 31st May 2008 at 12.00 noon.

Applications and initial enquires are invited for all of the above research areas, however, please note that only 10 appointments will initially be made dependent on the strength of applications received.  Further appointments will be made beyond 2008, so your interest in any of the listed areas will be welcomed and noted.
