Minisymposium 7.1 Recent Advances in Graphene Modeling and Simulations

Organizers:

Traian Dumitrica, University of Minnesota

Cristian V. Ciobanu, Colorado School of Mines

Sukky Jun, University of Wyoming

Graphene has risen as apromising material for groundbreaking applications in nanoelectronic devices, owing to a host of new physical phenomena occurring in a single layer of carbonatoms. The interest in graphene research is fuelled by the promise that thismaterial can enable the continuation of the miniaturization trend innanoelectronics at a time when silicon-based devices are reaching their naturallimitations. The purpose of this symposium is to highlight the recentdevelopments in the field of graphene growth and relevant multiphysics issuesincluding the identification of the new directions and approaches to understandthe growth mechanisms on various substrates.

This symposium will bringtogether experts from theory, computation, and experiments and will cover thefollowing topical areas: (a) experiments and multi-scale theoretical approachesto understand the growth and morphology of graphene on silicon carbide, transitional metal oxides, and noble metal surfaces, (b) formation, properties, and signatures of the interfacial layer between graphene and the substrate, (c)influence of the substrate on the electronic structure of graphene, (d)large-scale morphological evolution of graphene domains on silicon carbide andother substrates, (e) structural, mechanical, and other physical properties ofgraphene and compound monolayers.
