Abaqus - modelling adhesive joint

Dear all,

I want to model two composite plates who are connected with an adhesive joint:

the upper and lower plate are modelled as composite plates while the vertical part on the right should represent the adhesive joint between them.

As you can see in the above picture, I moddeled all of them with shell elements. Now I 'm having some difficulties:

1.As you can see there is an overlap betweem them, I 'm afraid that this will cause a local increase in stifness, is this correct? What could be a possible solution to overcome this problem?

2. Is it correct to model the adhesive with shell elements? In literature I found that normally this is done with solids but since this is a very big model (50m long, rotorblade of windturbine) I would like to know whether this is possible without solids to minimize calculation time and pre-processing time.
