Overhead Electrical Conductors
In the review paper by Spak & al. (January 2013) on cable bending mechanical models, one class of models was not specifically mentioned, in which authors attempt to take into account the tangential elasticity at points of contact between cable layers. There are at least two noteworthy contributions:
- Hardy, C. and Leblond, A. On the dynamic flexural rigidity of taut stranded cables. Proc. of the Fourth Intl Symp. on Cable Dynamics; Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy; sept. 2003, pp. 45-52.
- Houle-Paradis, J.-P. Modeling of multilayer cable free bending taking into account contact elasticity. M.Sc. Thesis (in French). University of Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. April 2011. 92 pages.
In fact, Spak & al. do mention the Hardy and Leblond paper (p. 11) as the basis for Rawlins’ work (2009) without listing it in the refences.
The thesis (in French) by Houle-Paradis uses stick-slip equations from Papailiou (1995) and Hong et al. (2005) models and includes tangential elasticity effects at contact points. This results in a drastic decrease of the theoretical maximum bending stiffness (which applies for small imposed cable curvature).
