Abaqus 3D model and 2D meshed cross-sections

I have a 3D model in Abaqus of a wind turbine rotor, modelled with shell elements (S4R and S3). To use the same blade in an aeroelastic wind turbine code (HAWC2 from Risoe), I want to convert selected cross sections of the 3D model to Timoshenko beam elements.

For this end, I can use the 2D meshed beam cross-sections in Abaqus (see also "Analysis user's manual Volume II: Analysis, chapter 10.5.1" and "Analysis user's manual Volume IV: Elements, chapter 24.3.7"). However, this will require me to remodel (composite blade with different layers) several different cross sections along the blade to extract the corresponding Timoshenko beam representation. If this procedure would be part of an iterative design loop, it would be too cumbersome. I could not find any tools in Abaqus/CAE to facilitate a 3D model to 2D meshed cross-section transition, has any of you have any experience in automating this process?

I don't think the sectional analysis capability in ABAQUS is that accurate. You need to use a tool like VABS for the cross-sectional model to obtain blade properties. VABS is becoming the tool of choice in both wind industry and helicopter industry for blade modeling.
