Inorder to find out the residual stresses and distortions in butt weld due to thermal loads in steel plates, i have used
shell57 for thermal and shell43 for structural. The material properties used are temperature dependent.
I carried this out in two steps.
The thermal analysis is carried out first.
A moving heat source is used to generate the temperature distribution on the plate.
Following welding the plate is allowed to cool down to room temperature by naturalconvection due to ambient air.The results from the thermal analysis is ok.
The results from the thermal analysis are read to
the structural analysis using 'ldread' command.
Only half of the plate is considered to reduce the problem size.the ehermal results are solved for thermal stresses.A time step of .005 secs is used for the analysis.
The nodes at the extreme end from the weld line is constrained.Symmetry boundary condition is appled at the weld line.
This is the back ground of the problem. Kindly see if the following issues can be addressed.
(1)Convergence tolerance.
The problem does not work with the default tolerance.
CONvTOL command in ansys can be used to change the convergence tolerance. It uses a parameter called val for the typical value of force/moment. How can i decide the typical value of force /moment.Also, the other parameters like toler, minref.how can I decide the values of these.
(2)I have used a do loop to move the weld heat and incremented the time steps.
What is the procedure to restart the analysis if convergence is not achieved and program stops.
i have not been able to restart successfully from the point from where the program terminated after making necessary changes in the convergence tolerance or other modifications.
(3)The welded plate is usally allowed to cool after welding without any restraints. To simulate the same, i need to aplpy the thermal loads without applying DOF constraints. This results in rigid body motion. Can i attain the condition by using springs of low stiffness. How can apply this in the model after the process of welding is over.
I hope I have made myself clear.

It sound interesting, would
It sound interesting, would you please to send me the program (APDL) through my email: b_darmadi_djarot [at] yahoo.co.id
hi
hi..
I'm masters student at Mokpo national University in south Korea,my field of research is automated welding.
I'm trying to do some thermal analysis on ansys about welding, and trying to learn ansys software at the same time. Can you help me by providing some tutorial on how to do welding analysis on ansys.
My email address is reenal_r [at] yahoo.com.
your help is highly appreciated.

Can u help me Sudesh?
Hallo Sudesh..........
This is Adinath from Pune....Presently i am working on weld simulation for residual stress by FEA.I have read ur blog on imechanica.I feel u can help me for developing the APDL for moving heat source....Its my rewuest to u, Can u share the APDL with me or can u plz develop the same for my problem.U r efforts will be valued by suitable way..........so plz help me my mail id is adi_damale [at] rediff.com (adi_damale[at]rediff[dot]com)
Regarding movable heat source
Sir, if possible please provide me the codes you devloped for weld simulation
Please send me the program (APDL)
Dear meambers,
I am working on " Evaluation of Welding Residual Stress And Distortion During T joint Continuous Welding " for my M.Tech thesis I hope you have already completed your project, Please can you suggest me how to procede with ANSYS to carry out welding simulations regarding how to calculate Residual stresses anD distortion.
If possible please send me the program (APDL) for welding of T joint.
