Materialise launches Mimics® 13

New version introduces 3D LiveWire to easily segment very complex or low-quality scan data.

Leuven, Belgium, July 17, 2009. Materialise launches Mimics13, the latest release of the company’s medical imaging and editing software. This version focuses on enhancing the segmentation and optimization of your scan data to create better 3D models.  The most important ones are listed below. Check out our website for more information

3D LiveWire segments accurately very complex scan data

  • Mimics13 introduces the 3D LiveWire tool. This tool applies contour segmentation in 3 dimensions, which means that the magnetic lasso follows very precisely the boundaries of a gray-value area in your slices.
  • The process can be described as follows:
    • Select the area of interest with the magnetic lasso in the slices in 2 views
    • Mimics finds the boundaries in the remaining view and adds it to the mask
    • Correct the segmentation if necessary
    • Turn the selection into an accurate 3D model
  • Because this lasso follows the gray-value boundaries, it allows the user to segment very complex or low-quality scan data better than before.

Faster noise reduction in scan data

  • Materialise equipped Mimics13 with a mask smoothing function to create a more realistic segmentation.
  • This function smooths the segmentation mask and reduces the noises that was present in the scan data.

Calculate 3D models with common borders for FEA

  • The presence of neighbouring 3D models with common borders has a significant effect on the final outcome of finite element analysis. In Mimics13 it’s now possible to calculate two or more neighboring 3D models with common borders simultaneously.
  • Users can optimize the mesh as one part and they can assign a different material to each subvolume. The common borders ensure a perfect force transfer during simulation.
  • The improved remesher allows the user to deal even better with these complex meshes.

Wrap tool available as a 3D post-processing tool

  • The wrap tool, which closes small holes in a 3D model, was introduced previously in Mimics12.
  • With the new release, Materialise makes the wrap function available as a 3D post-processing tool in the STL+ module. This means that more people can benefit from this handy tool and generate nicely wrapped 3D models.
