Using Abaqus to include an edge crack in a model

Warm Greeting to everybody. I'm tring to carry out an analysis of a 2d crack problem in Abaqus using the seam crack in a special menubare in the interaction module, i sketched a partition in the model wich has the initial length of the requered crack, and when i use the assign seam tool and select the patition line from the model, an error window appear with this message: "The selected instance is a dependante instance and cannot be modified" may any one help me overcome this problem, the abaqus documentation desn't give a detailed information about that feature, i tried to create an instance sepratly from the model and it can be used only with the XFEM method on Abaqus but not with the integral contour on it.

I am trying to model a 2D edge crack using FEM but I do not understand the instructions.

The following are stated:

Partitioned

Select the crack front (first contour region);

Select the crack tip region;

Specify crack extensiondirection using Normal to crack plane;

Select start point;

Select end point.



there are then 3 green crosses



I then created a part using 2D wire next to where the green crosses start.

Job completed but no higher stresses at the crack area.
