Basic ABAQUS questions

Hi,

I am a novice ABAQUS user.  I've found out that I'm more comfortable using ABAQUS/Standard than the CAE version. The GUI is installled on a central server, thus it is slow, doesn't render images very well and keeps on crashing. I have some questions, which I guess are pretty straight forward for advanced users:

  1. How can I control the time-step? The manual says I can syggest the first time-step size, then abaqus takes over the decision making.
  2. Can I specify deformation as load instead of distributed load or concentrated load in input file? I guess I can, but how?
  3. Since GUI is giving me lot of grief, is it possible to read  .odb or .fil in matlab or any other linux based  free post-processor?

1) When creating a step, you can select fixed increment spacing. But you'd better leave it default(automatic increment by abaqus), you can give the initial increment , minimum, maximum increament. The meanings of these parameters are that abaqus will start computing with initial increment. when it find the last few increments can converge quickly, abaqus will automatically double the increment. and when abaqus find its use more iterations to get convergence or cannot convergence, abaqus will set increment smaller. when abaqus cannot get convergence even at the minimum increment you set, then the convergence will be regarded impossible.

 2) I guess there is some subroutine can make it. Maybe some user defined field. I once used the subroutine UTEMP to establish a pre-defined temprature field, which only depend on the coordinates of every nodes. I think there must be something similar for pre-defined deformation.

 3) Abaqus GUI is quite friendly to user, compared with ansys. try to find someone to each you. one afternoon is quite enough for u to get familiar with post processing in abaqus.

I am new to abaqus..i am using GUI interface..i have a question...i have an ellipsoidal solid Model i want to define different subparts on it..like i want to define the outer surface seperately i mean give different matl prop n inside surface a diff property with some thickness and so one can any one help me on thiz....Thnx

I am doing a project in which I am trying to study about the drilling of composite. The aim is to optimize the drill and process parameters to minimize the damage. For this I have tried to simulate the drilling process in ABAQUS and I am using the Hashin damage model. The problem is that Hashin damage model works only for the lamina which takes only plane stress elements. Since only plane elements are allowed I am unable to simulate cutting action of drill as the composite plate is effectively 2D.

 When I take 3D elements then Abaqus shows error that Hashin damage model cannot be applied for that plate. Also there is no other damage model for composites in Abaqus.

 As a result, I am stuck in this project. Please suggest.

Try to use continum shell. In this case, u can use lamina material  with a 3D element

Does anyone know how to keep a record of what you have done in a CAE session? I know I will have the .cae file, but I want to teach someone else what I have done, step by step. ANSYS keeps a log file that mimics exactly what you do in the ANSYS GUI, which is similar to CAE. How can I get CAE to write a log file with the steps that I did in the CAE session?

Abaqus will write a abaqus.rpy file which containts python script code. You can change te extension to .py and run it on the cae. Also when saving as MYFILE.cae abaqus saves a file called MYFILE.jnl. This jnl also containes (more clean then .rpy) python script lines (again you can change the extension to .py and run). I don't know if abaqus keeps a log of 'pseude code' as you might prefer.

road. I can define the sick temperature (depending on

with an analytical fiedl)in case of film condition
but in case of radiation
interaction I can't do the same.

Someone
knows how to include this interaction depending on the coordinates in

space?

Someone knows a subroutine which allows me include the radiation

depending on the space?

1. It looks like Tang answered your question pretty well.

2. Are you looking to apply a displacement instead of a force, or are you trying to directly impose a strain? The former you can do quite easily with a boundary condition, the latter I don't know how you would do.

Hi everyone,

 

 I am modelling a cantilever beam and I want to impose base excitation at one end according to some apmlitude and circular frequency.

I have defined an amplitude according to my needs. I have also defined a displacement boundary condition restraining motion in the other 2 directions. What value should I feed in the column U3 (the direction where I want to impose motion). Also if I put my amplitude, does it automatically assign it to the U3 direction? 

 

It may sound trivial but I am a beginner to Abaqus .

I want to modeling water absorpsion in ABAQUS for bulk adhesive was exposed to 100% relative humidity. How can I calculate moisture concentration for boundary conditions as regards all bulk adhesive surfaces are in 100% relative humidity?
