Approaching CNT Reinforcing Up-limit by Hydrogen Passivation Induced Dispersion

Xiaodong Li's picture

We have developed a technique, described in Advanced Materials , which combines hydrogen passivation with ultrasonication to successfully disperse multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in both absolute ethanol solution and epoxy resin, overcoming one of the greatest challenges in the application of nanotubes. Interestingly, using a three-point bending test, the elastic modulus of the resin/MWCNT composite is shown to increase with increasing nanotube content. The 1 wt.% MWCNT/epoxy nanocomposite fabricated by our coupled hydrogen passivation and ultrasonication dispersion method exhibits a surprisingly high increase in elastic modulus of 94.57%, 2.5 times higher than the reported values in literature.
