How to simplify the circular section to the 2-D plane strain problem

Submitted by yinqilin007 on

Hi friends,

I am calculating the bearing capacity of a circular footing on soil using the 3-Dimensional FE model. Meanwhile, I have seen some literature, in which they simplfied the 3-D model to 2-D plane strain model.  In their plane strain models, the footing has the same diameter with 3-D model.

The question is that how did they establish the relationship between the results from the 3-D model and the 2-D model? When they  got the bearing capacity F2D from the plane strain model, how do they convert to the real bearing capacity F3D ?  You know the circular footing is not strip footing with a very long thickness, which could be reasonably simplified to plane strain problem.

Any help is welcomed. Amillions thanks in advance!
