2019 Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Award – Professor Anil K. Bajaj and Professor Steven W. Shaw

The Executive Committee of the ASME Applied Mechanics Division is pleased to announce and congratulate both Professor Anil K. Bajaj, William E. and Florence E. Perry Head of Mechanical Engineering and Alpha P. Jamison Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Purdue University, and Professor Steven W. Shaw, Harris Professor of Mechanical and Civil Engineering, Florida Institute of Technology, as the recipients of the 2019 Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Award. This award, which includes a medal, a certificate, and an honorarium, will be presented at the AMD Honors and Awards Banquet, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 2019, during the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, November 8-14, 2019.

The Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Award, was established in 2008, and is conferred in recognition of an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of nonlinear dynamics through practice, research, teaching, and/or outstanding leadership.

Professor Bajaj is receiving this recognition for being a world renowned scholar and educator in nonlinear dynamics, with a strong emphasis on engineering applications. Over four decades, he has advised and mentored scores of doctoral students, who are leaders in their own right now.

Professor Shaw is being recognized for groundbreaking contributions to the theory and practice of nonlinear mechanical vibrations, including the discovery of invariant manifolds playing the role of nonlinear normal modes, the development of nonlinear techniques for nonsmooth oscillators, and the analysis and practical use of nonlinearities in MEMS devices.
