how to calculate stress in DEM

Hi guys,

I am using Discrete element method for my research. I just wonder if some one has any idea to calculate the stress of the particle when the loads applying on periphery of that particle are known?

this is one idea to simple case, for exemple a rectangular shape which is apllied by loads F1, F2 on two oposite surfaces as tensile loads. Then the stress can be calculated as:

stress=min(F1, F2)/(Crosional Area);

the difference load abs(F1-F2) is used for motion of that body

of course this is only simple example to illustrate my idea. Can any one give any comment for that way or suggest any other methods?

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Best regards,
