The Cyber-Physical Simulation Group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU Darmstadt in Germany is looking for an excellent candidate interested in doing research on a Ph.D. in the areas of computational mechanics and machine learning.

Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

Potential research directions include:

  • Nonlinear, inelastic, or multiphysics constitutive modeling with machine learning methods
  • Homogenization and multiscale simulation of metamaterials and composites
  • Computational methods for efficient microstructure modeling and simulation
  • Design and topology optimization of architected materials
  • Model order reduction of dynamic systems with machine learning methods

Required qualifications for the position are:

  1. Masters degree in a relevant subject (mechanical engineering, computational engineering, applied mathematics, etc.) from a reputable university and with excellent grades
  2. Strong background in at least 3 of the following subjects:
    • Nonlinear continuum mechanics or structural mechanics (plasticity or multiphysics are a plus)
    • Numerical analysis and finite element methods (higher-order methods or isogeometric analysis are a plus)
    • (Physics-informed) Machine learning (in particular, artificial neural networks)
    • Multiscale methods and homogenization
    • Design and topology optimization
    • Dynamic systems, model order reduction, and numerics of ODEs
  3. Strong programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or C++ (familiarity with open-source FE codes such as FENiCS, NGSolve, Moose, etc. is a plus)
  4. Familiarity with commercial FE software such as ANSYS, Abaqus or COMSOL
  5. Proficiency in English. German language skills are a plus, but not required

The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Graduate School Computational Engineering.

To apply, please send your documents including a cover letter, CV, and bachelor and master certificates and transcripts by email to Prof. Dr. Oliver Weeger with the subject "Ph.D. position in computational mechanics and machine learning" by Monday, February 28, 2022. Your cover letter should be no longer than 1-2 pages and clearly state your research interests and previous experience, as well as your motivation to do a Ph.D. in our group. The expected starting date will be September 2022 or earlier.
