Title: Modeling the fatigue behavior of thermomechanical shape memory alloys: Application to the optimization of biocompatible actuators for cardiac implants.
Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions available immediately in the Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. Advisors: Prof. Kurt Maute and Prof. Alireza Doostan.
We demonstrate intersting extension-torsion-inflation coupling in intrinsically twisted chiral tubes. In particular, we show that by tuning its intrinsic twist and the material constants, such tubes can show negative poison effect on being stretched. Similarly, such tubes can overwind initially when stretched - the same unusual behavior has been reported earlier when a DNA molecule is stretched.

A postdoctoral researcher position is open in my group to work on multi-scale and inverse models for soft tissues and heart valve mechanics. The aim of this research will be to develop models that predict aortic stenosis - the most common valve-related disease that affects 5% of the elderly. The project is funded through the research council of UK, and will provide opportunities of working closely with clinicians and experimental collaborators.

Cross-linked liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) are smart materials for large light-activated variation or bend to transfer luminous energy into mechanical energy. We study the light-induced behavior of homeotropic nematic network polymer plates. The perturbation method is applied to find approximate solutions under uniform illumination and compared with finite element simulations. Moreover, situations of nonuniform laser illumination are investigated.
Inspired by the need to develop reconfigurable materials at the micro- and nano- scales that are capable of exhibiting more than one stable configuration, we employed both theoretical and computational models supported by experiments to study the multistable behavior of a Si/Cr microclaw and uncover the mechanical principles involved.

A transducer is a system that couples two loads. For example, an electromechanical transducer couples a mechanical force and an electrical voltage. A two-load, nonlinear system can exhibit rich behavior of bifurcation, which can be displayed in a three-dimensional space, with the horizontal plane representing the two loads, and the vertical axis representing the state of the system. In this three-dimensional space, a state of equilibrium at fixed loads corresponds to a point on a surface.
