Failure simulation and design optimization of bioinspired heterogeneous interfaces by Floquet-based bar-spring model

Submitted by Zuoqi Zhang on

Interface plays a critical role in the mechanical performance of composites. Lack of a suitable interface design has long been a bottleneck impeding the full exploitation of the mechanical strengths of many superior reinforcement phases such as the high-performance carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes.

2 Post-Doc Positions in Computational Materials Science

Submitted by Erik Bitzek on

Within the framework of the Cluster of Excellence Engineering of Advanced Materials at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg the materials modeling group of the Institute for General Material Properties is inviting applications for postdocs in the field of atomistic simulations of mechanical properties.  The research projects will focus on the role of interfaces on the plastic deformation and fracture of nanostructured materials.

Fracture in Composite/Aluminium Joints of Variable Adhesive Properties

Submitted by MKB on

Hello everyone,

One of the papers from the 'past' (but still quite actual...I think) and maybe of some interest to various communities.

Abstract:

A system in which one adherend had two types of surface treatment was tested using a wedge test.

Simple polishing and polishing with subsequent sandblasting were the

treatments used, with a distinct straight line, perpendicular to the sample edges,

separating the two. Despite the clear-cut difference in surface treatment, smooth

PhD position at the University of Glasgow on “Modelling of geo-engineered barriers for underground nuclear waste storage”

This project will take place at the School of Engineering of the
University of Glasgow in the UK and will be jointly supervised by Dr
Domenico Gallipoli and Dr Peter Grassl. The project will develop the
simulation tools for predicting the long-term behaviour of
geo-engineered barriers used in the geological (underground) storage of
nuclear waste. A typical geological storage scheme for nuclear waste
