Unsolicited proposals on Dynamical Systems

Submitted by Ken P. Chong on

The Dynamical Systems program in the Directorate of Engineering and the Applied Mathematics Program in the directorate of Mathematical and Physical Sciences Sciences, of the National Science Foundation, have just published a joint "Dear Colleague Letter", expressing interest in special topics in Dynamical Systems.  The letter encourages unsolicited proposals on the following topics:

Exact relations in the micromechanics of composites

Submitted by Biswajit Banerjee on

There are several exact relations from the theory of composites that can be used to determine whether a new numerical or analytical approach gives reasonable answers. Here's a paper on some exact relations that I wrote up a long time ago and just recently posted on Scribd.

The post LHC universe?

Submitted by Biswajit Banerjee on

Most of you have heard about the commissioning of the Large Hadron Colider (LHC) by CERN and then the explosion of Helium followed by a postponement of operation until spring next year.  One of the worries some people had was that a mini black hole would be created by the collsions.  Also, the anthropic principle in one of its forms suggests that every possible universe exists but we see only our universe because it's the one in which intelligent observers exist.

Simple and highly accurate two dimensional finite elements for laminated composite structures

Submitted by psubbu2000 on

I have developed a set of simple and highly accurate two dimensional finite elements for the analysis of laminated composite structures. These elements are capable of accurately predicting three dimensional stress state (all six stresses) using constitutive law.  These elements reduce modeling effort, computational time and increase solution accuracy.

Can someone suggest me a proper source to support my research financially?

Submitted by Cesar Vasques on

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), with the support of ECCOMAS, invites you to participate in the fourth edition of the international conference Smart Structures and Materials (SMART’09), that will be held at the Campus of FEUP, at the city of Porto, Portugal, from July 13-15, 2009 (www.fe.up.pt/~smart09).

Mechanics of Microtubules Buckling Supported by Cytoplasm

Submitted by Hanqing Jiang on

The cytoskeleton provides the mechanical scaffold and maintains the integrity of cells.  It is usually believed that one type of cytoskeleton biopolymer, microtubules, bear compressive force.  In vitro experiments found that isolated microtubules may form an Euler buckling pattern with a long wavelength for very small compressive force.  This, however, does not agree with in vivo experiments where microtubules buckle with short-wavelength.  In order to understand the structural role of microtubules in vivo, we (Jiaping Zhang and Hanqing Jiang) developed a mechanics model to study microtubule buckling supported by cytoplasm.  We found that the ability for a cell to sustain compressive force does not solely rely on mic
