Effects of grain boundary adhesion and grain size on ductility of thin metal films on polymer substrates

Submitted by Teng Li on

We study the effects of grain boundary adhesion and grain size on the ductility of thin metal films well bonded to polymer substrates, using finite element method. It is shown that the ductility of polymer-supported metal films increases approximately linearly as the grain boundary adhesion increases, and as the grain size decreases. A rule-of-thumb estimate of the ductility of polymer-supported metal films agrees well with the simulation results.

Viscoelastic prarameters setting in ABAQUs

Submitted by h.l.Li on

i'm try to do a dynamic analysis by abaqus and i faced some problems.any help is appreciated.

The structure is a 3 layers plates,a viscoelastic material sandwich between 2 steels.i modeled the 2 steel as sheel 'S8R"and the rubber as contiuum  "c3d20r",rubber is not thin. Now i don't know how to set the parameters requried by the Code.I hove some parameters abuout the viscoelastic material.,includeing shear storage modulus G(f)=exp(-2.69292)*f^(0.6937),and loss factor of the material L(f)=exp(0.60503)*f^(-0.08807), Possion ratio=0.49, where f is frequency in Hz.

Unconverged Mohr-Coulomb Plasticity, ABAQUS

Submitted by gcorral on

Dear Abaqus Users,First of all, I want to clarify that I am a beginner in Abaqus (only few months) and new in iMechanica. I have been modeling an excavation in Abaqus/CAE. I am using several layers of soils which have been modeled using Mohr-Coulomb model, the wall as an elastic material. Both the wall and the soils were modeled with 2D solid elements (plane strain).I have been facing with lots of problem with the interaction of the first layer and the wall, "UNCONVERGED MOHR-COULOMB PLASTICITY" in the GEOSTATIC STEP!!!!.

Should we be patenting our research

Submitted by ericmock on

I recently stumbled across the patent that is attached to this post.  It's title 'Simulation of String Vibration' obviously caught my attention.  Hoping there was more to it, I downloaded and read it.  To save you the time, I'll summarize.  It basically reads like a conference paper that would probably not get accepted into any respectable journal.  What is patent is a little more specific than the title would imply but nothing that is any more than a trivial extension of existing research.  Essentially the patent describes a way (finite elements) to simulate t

Post-Doctoral Research Position in Experimental Mechanics, University of Delaware

Submitted by Michael H. Santare on

We seek a highly qualified applicant for a post-doctoralresearch position in experimental mechanics and materials.  The successful candidate will designand conduct experiments establishing mechanical properties of thin polymerfilms and layered composite materials at a range of temperatures and humidityconditions. The project aims towards improving the durability of polymer fuelcells and is funded through DOE. Funding for this position is availableimmediately for a period of one year and may be renewed thereafter.
