PhD position on wave-ice interaction at Aalto University, Finland

Hello,

We are looking for a doctoral student to work on wave-ice interaction. The emphasis in this research is on experiments in the 40m x 40m Aalto Ice and Wave Tank with a novel wave-maker, and our interest extends to ship-wave-ice interaction. The position is fully funded for four years and may include also field work.

Postdoctoral Researcher position in the field of experimental ice mechanics

Understanding how ice fractures has fundamental importance in arctic marine technology and geophysics. The fracture processes of interest include fragmentation of sea ice against polar ships, ice sheets broken by ocean waves, leads forming in sea ice, and formation of crevasses in glaciers. The importance of ice fracture research is enhanced by global warming, which is both increasing the fragmentation and changing the mechanical properties of ice. Warm ice is different that cold ice.

TWO DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITIONS IN ICE MECHANICS

The positions are in the research group of Marine and Arctic Technology.

A DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION IN FRACTURE OF SEA ICE

Aalto University School of Engineering in Finland has an open position for a doctoral student in the Arctic Marine and Ice Technology research group at the Department of Applied Mechanics. Our research group studies the behavior of ships and structures in ice, ice mechanics and also assesses the impact of sea ice on the safety of maritime transportation. An important part of our research is experimental work. For that we have excellent possibilities as we operate the Aalto Ice Tank, a 40 m × 40 m ice model basin.
