Society of Engineering Science (SES) Board of Directors---Call for Nominations

Submitted by Pradeep Sharma on

On behalf of the Board of Directors of SES, we are soliciting nominations to fill 2 positions in the SES Board of Directors. The SES members will elect the directors from the nominees. The Board plays an important role in defining the vision of SES, organizing various SES events, managing society finances, and evaluating nominations for the SES awards. Please nominate your colleagues to serve the Board. All we need are the name of the nominee and 1-2 sentences on why you think he/she might be appropriate for the SES Board.

Yong Zhu is the recipient of the 2016 Eshelby Mechanics Award for Young Faculty

Submitted by Pradeep Sharma on

It gives me great pleasure to announce the outcome of the 2016 competition for the Eshelby Mechanics Award for Young Faculty. This award is given annually to rapidly emerging junior faculty who exemplify the creative use and development of mechanics. The intent of the award is to promote the field of mechanics, especially among young researchers. The selection committee consisted of: K. Ravi-chandar (UT Austin), Huajian Gao (Brown University), G.

Book Review On: Extending the Theory of Composites to Other Areas of Science; Author: Graeme Walter Milton

We would be hard-pressed to find an area of research that permeates so deeply in nearly all branches of physical sciences and mathematics as does the topic of homogenization [1].

REMINDER: (Due Dec 5th) Call for Nominations for the Eshelby Mechanics Award for Young Faculty

Submitted by Pradeep Sharma on

It is my pleasure to solicit nominations for the "Eshelby Mechanics Award for Young Faculty". This award, launched in 2012, is given annually to rapidly emerging junior faculty who exemplify the creative use and development of mechanics. The intent of the award is to promote the field of mechanics, especially among young researchers. While interdisciplinary work that bridges mechanics with physics, chemistry, biology and other disciplines is encouraged, the ideal awardee will demonstrate clear inspiration from mechanics in his/her research.

Open Faculty Position at the University of Houston

Submitted by Pradeep Sharma on

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston (UH) invites applications for a tenure-track at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall 2017. Candidates are expected to establish an internationally recognized dynamic research program in the broad areas of theoretical and/or solid mechanics. A short course on "stability analysis and bifurcation theory" by Ryan Elliott

Submitted by Pradeep Sharma on

With a growing interest in soft materials, stability and bifurcation analysis is re-emerging to be a critical topic for mechanicians. There are some excellent books out there but most tend to focus on finite dimensional systems rather than (continuous) infinite dimensional systems which are of most interest to mechanicians. In general, much of the modern developments on this topic are scattered across journal papers and perhaps there are not too many pedagogical resources for beginners.
