Strain energy density for a plate under uniform stretch deformation

Submitted by Mijia Yang on

Can anyone give a definition about strain energy density for a plate? When a plate under a uniform stretch s, some gives an equation like ek=Es2/2(1+μ)(1-2μ), some gives ek=Es2/2. What are the difference of these two definition? Please note both of the cases are for plane stress conditions. If under plane strain conditions, what is the definition for its strain energy density? Thanks for help.

Graduate (PhD/MS) studentship available in Utah State University

Submitted by Dhirendra Kubair on

There are several  fully funded graduate student openings in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Utah State University (http://www.mae.usu.edu). The openings are in the broad area of Computational Solid Mechanics. In particular, applicants having demonstrated interest (in terms of completed projects, authorship in journal articles or coursework) in Fracture Mechanics are especially invited.

Reporting stress from FEA

Submitted by onkar bhise on

I have some doubts about reporting stress in FEA.

For a static analysis, if I am getting high surface stresses in a section, however stress is reducing throughout the thickness.

I checked for the membrane stress at that section & it is approx. 75% of the max. surface stress. However, sectional nodal average stress is approx. 45% of the max. stress.

Which stress should I report in such situation? Thanks.

CONTACT set up in irregular surface.-analysis in Ansys

Submitted by one on

Hi all, i am the final semester student in.Struc Mecha. For my final
project i have to model combine sheet pile with  FEM. i used ansys for
set up the model. Combination of AZ,HZ n RZ profile were developed
sheet pile. In my modelling i applied frictional contact to define all
the connection between two parts. When i run my calculation, it does
not converged when body get  contact. I was applied spring and small
load step in set up.but still does not work too..if anybody have any
