Professor Nicolas Triantafyllidis, of Ecole Polytechnique and the University of Michigan, is selected to receive the 2010 Warner T. Koiter Medal.
I am writing on behalf of the Warner T. Koiter Medal Committee: Zhigang Suo (Chair), Tayfun E. Tezduyar, Ares J. Rosakis, Kenneth M. Liechti, Lawrence A. Bergman, Daniel J. Inman, Krishnaswamy Ravi-Chandar, Thomas N. Farris, Wing Kam Liu, Mary C. Boyce, Richard James, C.T. Sun, Pierre Suquet, Ray Ogden, Zenon Mroz.
The Warner T. Koiter Medal, established in 1996, is bestowed in recognition of distinguished contributions to the field of solid mechanics with special emphasis on the effective blending of theoretical and applied elements of the discipline, and on a high degree of leadership in the international solid mechanics community.
The award was funded by the Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands, to honor Warner T. Koiter for his fundamental work in nonlinear stability of structures in the most general sense, for his diligence in the effective application of these theories, his international leadership in mechanics, and his effectiveness as a teacher and researcher.
Professor Triantafyllidis is selected to receive the 2010 Warner T. Koiter Medal “for seminal contributions to the theory and application of stability concepts in the nonlinear response and failure of solids and structures; and for contributions to the international solid mechanics community through various leadership positions.”
The Medal, which includes a bronze medal, a certificate, and an honorarium of $2000, will be presented at the Applied Mechanics Banquet, tentatively scheduled on Tuesday, 16 November 2010, during the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, to be held in Vancouver, Canada, 12-18 November 2010.
As a part of the tradition, before the Applied Mechanics Banquet, the Koiter medalist of the year will deliver a one-hour technical lecture.
Please join us in Vancouver to congratulate Professor Triantafyllidis.

Abstract
The model problem proposed to study the buckling
of stratified geological layers consists of a linearly elastic plate,
capable of accommodating finite rotations, resting over an inviscid and
buoyant fluid. The Lyapunov–Schmidt–Koiter decomposition is applied to
construct the bifurcated equilibrium solutions. The asymptotic analysis
of the post-buckling reveals a decrease in the magnitude of the lateral
compressive force during an overall shortening of the stratified
structure. Buckling and post-buckling are not influenced by the presence
of a vertical stress gradient in the elastic plate.

Abstract
An important property of some metallic alloys,
such as NiTi, for technological applications is their coupled
thermo-mechanical shape memory behavior. This is due to
temperature-dependent first-order displacive (martensitic)
transformations in which their crystal structures transform between a
higher symmetry cubic phase and lower symmetry phases (rhombohedral,
tetragonal, orthorhombic, or monoclinic).
In a recent paper, Elliott
et al. (J. Mech. Phys. Solids, in press) proposed a nano-mechanical
model based on temperature-dependent atomic potentials to explicitly
construct an energy density W(F;θ) to find all the different
equilibrium paths and their stability of a stress-free bi-atomic perfect
crystal as a function of temperature. In this work we investigate the
influence of hydrostatic pressure. In general, hydrostatic compression
increases the critical temperatures on the principal branches. For the
same absolute value, hydrostatic tension is found to have a more
pronounced effect on the equilibrium paths than hydrostatic compression.
