1 Postdoc and 1 PhD student positions are available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MEK), Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
The aims of the project are to investigate the biochemical and biophysical properties, surface and interface properties, and biotribological properties of mucin and mucus gels as a function of their origin (different animal species and organs), exposure to varying environment (pH, ionic strength, and temperature), and interaction with foreign materials. Ultimate goal of this project is to unravel the unique lubricity of mucins and mucus gels. However, multidisciplinary research tasks, spanning over glycobiology, biophysics and biochemistry, surface science, and biotribology, are required to successfully fulfill the position duties for both postdoc and PhD student. This project is funded by a Starting Grant 2010 from the European Research Council (ERC).
Starting date: As soon as possible.
Qualifications
The successful candidates should have:
Postdoc Position
- Ph.D. in the field of glycobiology, protein chemistry, or biomaterials
- Experience in purification of proteins/glycoproteins, previous working experience on mucins or similar glyco-conjugates is a highly valuable advantage.
- Experience in methodologies used for purification and chemical and structural characterization of glycans or oligosaccharides stemming from glyco-conjugates is an obvious advantage.Experience in bio-surface science
- Interest in biotribology
- Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks
- Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
PhD student position
- Ms. in the field of materials science, biology, chemistry, mechanical engineering or related subjects
- Experience in surface science and/or tribology desirable, but not required
- Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks
- Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
Application is accepted online until April 29, 2011. But, earlier application is encouraged; the interview will start as soon as competitive application is received.
