As a change from the usual Concepts NREC focus on the "state-of-the-art," in this Webinar, Dr. Nick Baines, Distinguished Corporate Fellow at CN, will go back in time. He will summarize the history of the steam turbine, which began 2000 years ago, and, beginning in the 19th century, led the way in electrical power generation and ship propulsion.
Unlike conventional histories, the focus will be on the technology - aerodynamic, thermodynamic, and manufacturing - rather than the individuals involved. However, it is important to celebrate the achievements of pioneers such as Hero of Alexandria, Branca, del Laval, Curtis, and Parsons, and these will be reviewed.
Besides the intrinsic interest in the history of our subject, the real motive in studying the historical development of the steam turbine is to lead to an understanding of the design and features of the modern-day steam turbine. If you are interested to know how we got to where we are today, listen in and enjoy.
