Postdoc in Mechanics of Materials at University of Sydney, Australia

Submitted by Luming Shen on

An exciting research position for a Postdoctoral Research Associate is available
in a project to understand the dynamic properties of alloys and composites
under high strain rates. The project is funded by the Australian Research
Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Design in Light Metals. As the
School is strengthening its research and teaching capabilities in the area of
Mechanics and Materials, this is an opportunity for individuals to expand on
their pre-existing research findings or to start a new research career.

You will join the ARC CoE research team led by Dr. Luming Shen and will be required to undertake Hopkinson bar experiments for understanding dynamic properties
of metallic materials, metal foams and composites under high strain rates and
publish the outcomes in the refereed international journals.

Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate outstanding research potential or experience, with a
PhD (or significant progress towards a PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering
or a related area. Demonstrated ability to publish research outcomes in
high-quality international journals with hands-on experience in Hopkinson bar
experiments and finite element analysis of impact problems is also an essential
criterion. Experience in advanced materials, composites, microstructure of metals, crystal plasticity modeling and fatigue/fracture will also be highly
regarded.

The position is full-time fixed-term for 2.5 years subject to completion of a satisfactory probation and
confirmation period for new appointees. Further offer may be available subject
to performance, funding and need. Membership of a University approved
superannuation scheme is a condition of appointment.

Remuneration package: approximate range AU$76K - AU$82K p.a. plus leave loading and 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation.

Some assistance towards travelling cost and visa sponsorship may be available for
the successful appointees if required and level of appointment will be
commensurate with experience and qualifications.

All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website.  Visit sydney.edu.au/positions and search
by the reference number (806/0511A) for more information and to apply.

CLOSING DATE: 30 November 2011 (11:30pm Sydney time)
