PhD Positions in Computational Multiscale Multiphase Mechanics for Geomaterials at the University of Colorado at Boulder

We are currently seeking PhD students to conduct research in the general area of computational multiscale multiphase mechanics within the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder.  The research may involve one or more of the following topics: (1) overlap coupling between a 3D ellipsoidal DEM code and a finite strain pressure-sensitive micromorphic elastoplasticity finite element implementation in an opensource C++ code Tahoe ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/tahoe/ ) to model interfacial mechanics between deformable solids and dry or wet granular soils, or to provide transition from continuum FE modeling to open-window mesoscale modeling of large deformations and fragmentation in granular soils; (2) coupling of DEM formulation to pore liquid and gas phases at high velocities, including fracture modeling of DEM particles; (3) formulation of triphasic (solid-liquid-gas) micromorphic finite strain mixture continuum mechanics and constitutive modeling, and FE implementation into Tahoe, with overlap coupling to multiphase DEM for granular soils, and to multiphase RKPM for cohesive soils.
