Assistant Directors for Undergraduate Studies in both Engineering Sciences and Mechanical Engineering
The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences seeks qualified candidates for positions as Assistant Directors for Undergraduate Studies in both Engineering Sciences and Mechanical Engineering, with concurrent lectureships. The successful candidates will teach courses within the relevant undergraduate concentration and assist with the management of that concentration.
These positions report academically to the relevant concentration area dean and administratively to the assistant dean for academic programs.
Responsibilities
Within the relevant undergraduate concentration: conducting and coordinating student advising and mentoring; monitoring students' progress towards degrees; teaching or co-teaching one entry-level course each semester.
Other responsibilities include: identifying and coordinating placements for research opportunities within SEAS or other Harvard research laboratories; working with the SEAS Undergraduate Student Affairs Office on all documentation and events related to the concentration; working with faculty members to identify best pedagogical practices and to develop courses; assessing existing courses; advising teaching staff on pedagogy; developing and maintaining concentration-related literature and its Web presence.
Qualifications
These positions require a Ph.D. in engineering sciences, mechanical engineering, or a related field, and a breadth of understanding that includes electrical engineering, biomechanical engineering, environmental engineering, and engineering design; the documented ability to teach effectively to undergraduate students; familiarity with engineering design, preferably with some experience teaching design; excellent communication skills; a strong commitment to education and mentoring, including experience with advising and course/program development.
