Postdoc Position in Multiscale Mechanics - Northwestern University

Submitted by tf325 on

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position within the Micro and Nano Mechanics Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University. The successful candidate will participate in a vibrant interdisciplinary research group and will be involved in projects addressing multiscale mechanics of hierarchical carbon-based materials as part of a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI). In our research group, we believe in a combined experimental-computational approach; therefore, the candidate will be working in close collaboration with theoretical modelers to facilitate the understanding of experimental findings.

Requirements:

  1. A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related area is required.
  2. Working experience in nanoscale science and/or engineering, including at a minimum two of the following areas:
    1. Multiscale experimental mechanics of advanced materials
    2. In-situ SEM/TEM/Raman/AFM experimental characterization
    3. CNT-graphene functionalization with application to composite materials
    4. Mechanics of carbon based materials (carbon fibers/CNT fibers/CNT-graphene composites)
  3. A good record of publications
  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

The position is available immediately for a period of one year and may be renewed thereafter. Actual start date is negotiable. Applications will be reviewed immediately and continue to be accepted until the positions are filled. Interested candidates should submit a CV, a cover letter describing their research experience and interests, and the names and email addresses of at least three references to Horacio D. Espinosa at the address below. Northwestern University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action educator and employer.

Why this is a great opportunity:

  • Great experience in a top US university and world renowned mechanics group
  • Interaction with leading MEMS/Nanotechnology researchers at Northwestern, Argonne National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratory
  • Challenging applications with an opportunity to make a big impact
  • First class working environment and supporting facilities
  • Many cultural and recreational activities in the university and Chicago area
  • Comprehensive benefits and participation in patents

Interested candidates should submit a CV, a cover letter describing their research experience and interests, and the names and email addresses of at least three references to:
