Post-doc Multiscale Fracture with Error Control

Applicants
are invited for a Research Associate position at Cardiff School of
Engineering. The aim of the post is to deliver an error-controlled
strategy for the multiscale simulation of fracture in heterogeneous
media. The successful candidate will have experience with advanced
numerical methods such as multiscale/multigrid methods, domain
decomposition and advanced discretisation methods for PDEs and/or with
numerical analysis such as model and discretisation error estimation. A
working knowledge of solid mechanics is essential.

This is a full-time post and is fixed-term for 13 months.



Salary: £30,122 - £35,938 per annum (Grade 6)

• To lead independent research in the area of multiscale methods and error estimation for fracture in heterogeneous solids.
  
  
• To work collaboratively with other staff within and external to the research team.
  
  
• To produce work of publishable quality for appropriate high quality international ISI peer reviewed journals.
  
  
• To prepare written summaries of the research undertaken.
  
  
• To communicate and present the research outcomes within the research group, at national and international meetings.
  
  
• To contribute to the development of collaborative research grant proposals.
  
  
• To support the supervision of postgraduate research students (PhD), undergraduate and MSc student projects.
  
  
• To disseminate research through web-based techniques, workshops, international publications and conferences.
  
  
• To help in the organisation of workshops, conferences and
  meetings as well as other events related to the successful running of
  the research group.
  
  
• To suggest and contribute to the development of research techniques and methods in collaboration with colleagues.
  
  
• To undertake administrative tasks associated with the
  research project, including the organisation of project meetings and
  documentation and the implementation of procedures required to ensure
  accurate and timely reporting.
  
  
• To present papers at national and international meetings.
  
  
• To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
  in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and
  licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures
  and codes as appropriate.
  
  
• To take reasonable care for the health and safety of
  yourself and of other persons who may be affected by yours acts or
  omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act
  1974, EC directives and the University's Safety, Health and Environment
  Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any

  the Project Manager that are not included above, but which will be
  consistent with the role.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and organisational skills with a
  proven ability to prioritise and meet deadlines within a framework of an
  agreed programme.
  
  
• Experience in either: advanced discretisation methods,
  computational fracture mechanics or error estimation in numerical
  methods.
  
  
• Experience in multiscale solvers (domain decomposition,
  multilevel techniques, advanced preconditioners, variational multiscale
  method, model order reduction.
  
  
• Proven ability in procedurial or object-oriented (preferably C++) programming.
  
  
• A first class or good second class degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
  
  
• A PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or other relevant equivalent experience.
  
  
• Experience of communicating to a variety of audiences through different media.
  
  
• Experience of research and development in a relevant field and conducting and organising research projects.
  
  
• A history of contributing to excellent publications in the area.
  
  
• Experience supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students.

 

Desirable Criteria:

• PhD in Computational Mechanics.
  
  
• MSc in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics.
  
  
• Experience in two or more of advanced discretisation techniques, model order reduction and multiscale methods.
  
  
• Experience in fracture mechanics.
  
  
• Experience in a posterior error estimation and adaptivity for non-linear problems.
  
  
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
