Nanoscale Mechanics of Polymer Nanocomposites and Nanostructured Materials

Organized by

Dr. Ashfaq Adnan, University of Texas at Arlington

Dr. Hassan Mahfuz, Florida Atlantic University

Co-Sponsored by the AMD Experimental Mechanics Technical Committee

 PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF TOPIC

Because of their superior mechanical and physical properties, polymer nanocomposites and nanostructured materials will play critical roles in many future technologies, both as the integral element of novel nanoscale devices and as the fundamental building blocks for the hierarchical design of advanced materials. Certainly, a quantitative understanding of their structure-property relations will be the key for applying them in novel devices and structures. However, finding suitable SP relations for nanomaterials becomes quite challenging because these materials often exhibit size-dependent properties at the nanoscale, a phenomenon that is not observed at the macroscopic scale.  As such, to understand the behavior of nanoscale systems, a rigorous treatment of the subject will be necessary especially linking the phenomena at the nanoscale with those at the continuum level.  The idea of this symposium is to review recent advances in multi-scale modeling area and open up a forum for discussion. Topics of interest would include, but not limited to the following:

i. Multi-scale modeling of materials

ii. Molecular dynamic simulation of nanocomposites

iii. Polymer nanocomposites and prediction of properties

iv. Nanomechanics and relevant micromechanics

v. Cohesive zone modeling

vi. Micro-nano coupling in biomaterials

Prospective authors should submit a 400-word abstract by via the web tool at the Congress 2013 website. Final papers will be available on CD-ROM at the meeting.

Select papers from symposia sponsored by the AMD and MD Composites Committees will be included in a special issue of the ASME Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology (JEMT) (Chief Editor: Prof. Hussein Zbib)

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: February 7, 2013.
