mapped meshing model having a crack in ansys

Zoeb Kaizar Lakdawala's picture

hi,

i am student of M tech 2nd year and working on fracture mechanics one of the problems i am encoutaring is that my model is a rectangular plate and having a central hole with a crack now problem is that i can not mapped mesh the model in ansys can anyone tell me how to map meshed the model.

hello,

it is a classical problem about meshing. initially you must divide the model to have two symmetrical areas.  as you know, you have to have four lines to make mapped meshing. to merge the lines at the crack region, you can use "concatenate" under "meshing" in preprocessor.

Note: if you want an example model, I can send one to your mail address.

best wishes...

hi all..

i am having one doubt, please help me.

In a isotropic plate,  if crack tip is present then to model the crack tip we use quarter point element ( IN ANSYS).

if we wants to model more than one crack tip than ,, ansys will give following error

" Only one stress concentration can be specified per area"

Please let me know what is the procedure to model more than one crack tip.

Thanking you

hi Mehmet.

i am vinaya, working on similar problem and i will be greatful to you if you send the example of the model

thanking you

hii,

sir actually i m a beginner in Ansys. i m facing the same problem of meshing(mapped) a area with a crack. i also want to know how to use symmetry of the object while using mapped mesh. my prblm is vry simple(a rectangular area with rectangular crack in between) but since i know little about mapped mesh n ansys i m struggling with it. so if u can help me out i will be vry thyank full to u.

i would be very thankful to you if you could send me the related example

thanks again

I would just cut the area (or volume) in 4 parts and use symmetry on one of the quarters...

Then you can map mesh any of the quarters using any 4 of the 5 keypoints it have. Change the option on the mesh tool to pick points and select the area, then the keypoints. But anyway you dont need a map mesh in order to modl this... In fact, I would not model a crack in ANSYS... Crack behaviour is too dificult for ANSYS. I would just do a simple static analysis combined with some LCF calcs... The stresses around the tip of a crack cant be predicted so easilly in ANSYS... Anyway... you could try...

And by the way... you dont need four lines to map mesh an area...actually you can have whatever lines they are... but you can only do a map mesh using four keypoints...

Good luck!

I'm a master student

I do all analysis steps for non-linear solution for simply supported I steel beam, to find the buckling load but the relation between load and deflection in the center of web panel become linear and I couldn't find the buckling load.

I don't know where is the error??

please help me

thanks

hi ... i am doing multiple crack analysis using ANSYS. i m using a circular disc having dia of 200 mm , thickness 6 mm and two parallal cracks of 30 mm at centre...cracks are seperated by a distance of 5 mm...plese tell me how i can find the Stress Intensity Factor at the crack tip... i have followed all the steps given in ANSYS help..but still i did not get the results.....there are an error which is "The crack face is not parallal to currently active x axis"...plese help me how to solve this problem

You should creat a local coordinate system which its x axis is parallel to the crack face.

thanks ma'm....

actuallly i want to find SIF at crack tip...can i create  local cocrdinate system at origin or any other place rather than crack tip......

Hi vijayujjain82,

You have to create local coordinate system. If you want, I can send an example (but it was written turkish language)

good luck

thanks sir ...plese send to me that example

I am doing my current work on spot welding coupled analysis. as soon i model contact electrically and then try to get the joule heat generation it says .."heat input for some element is invalid"...i am using plane 223 and conta 172 and targe169.

plzz send me some electric, thermal contact modelling and analysis tutorials.   solution is not converging too in contact simulation.

Hi All,

i am doing my m. tech project on " FE modeling and validating for a crack emanating from one rivet hole and approaching another rivet hole".I have developed the FE model in ANSYS and tabulated stress intensity factor at crack tip from different crack length. But to validate my result i want an mathematical model or formula. Please suggest me an formula to find KI at the crack tip for this problem.
