Simpleware Case Study: Vertebral Endplate Morphology and Permeability

This study used Simpleware software and ANSYS Fluent to investigate the transport properties of the bony endplate (BEP). Understanding the BEP is important when considering fluid and nutrient exchanges between vertebra and intervertebral discs (IVDs. uCT and CFD were combined to evaluate the 3D microstructure and resistance to fluid flow of the BEP, resulting in a calculation of tissue permeability. The results demonstrated the value of image-based modelling and CFD for analysis of complex processes within the human body.

Methodology

Endplates from eight human vertebrae were acquired using CT scanning

The images were loaded, segmented and measured in Simpleware ScanIP

Simpleware +FE was used to generate volume meshes for export to ANSYS Fluent for permeability simulation

Results were consistent with experimental measurements of permeability
