The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE, http://maeweb.ucsd.edu/) at the Jacobs School of Engineering (JSOE) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor rank with research focus on experimental and/or computational mechanics of advanced materials under extreme conditions. The candidate should have a strong background in mechanics and materials with experience that could be broadly related to energy generation, energy storage, manufacturing, materials failure, fracture, etc.  Applicants should have a strong interest in nano and micro design of materials for optimal performance.

The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering of JSOE at UCSD fosters a balanced program of research and instruction that integrates the perspectives of continuum mechanics, structure of matter, materials science, and energy harvesting, conversion and storage. The department has a longstanding tradition of leadership through innovations in analytical, computational, and experimental concepts and methodologies in the field of mechanics and materials science.

Successful candidates will be expected to: (1) build on the department’s existing strengths in analytical, computational, and experimental solid mechanics at the multi-scale level and spearhead/direct a strong research program to characterize material response under high deformation rates, pressures, and temperatures, possibly far from equilibrium conditions; (2)  excel at teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate university students; and (3) help foster a climate that supports equity, inclusion, and diversity.  Successful applicants for the Associate or Full Professor rank should have an exemplary record of teaching and scholarly activities including externally funded research. A PhD or advanced to candidacy in the field of Mechanical Engineering, or related field, is required for this position.

Strong research areas of particular relevance to this position in the department include: micro/nanoscale solid mechanics; computational and experimental mechanics of advanced materials under extreme conditions; deformation and failure at extremely high rates; multi-scale materials modeling; microstructural evolution in materials under extremely high pressures, temperatures, and deformation rates.

For applicants interested in spousal/partner employment, please visit the UCSD Partner Opportunities Program website:http://academicaffairs.ucsd.edu/offices/partneropp/.

Salary: The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications; salary based on UC pay scales and market conditions.

Closing Date: Applicants applying by January 31, 2015 will be given full consideration.  The position is open until filled.

To Apply: The application (CV, a statement of research and teaching interests, 3-5 reference contacts and a separate statement describing your past experience in activities that promote diversity and inclusion and/or plans to make future contributions) should be submitted electronically to the MAE department at
https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF00690

For further information about contributions to diversity statements, see http://facultyequity.ucsd.edu/
