Lecturer (Above The Bar) in Dynamics, UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (Permanent)

UCDHR's picture

The UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering seek to appoint an outstanding academic with a suitably strong record of research and teaching in Dynamics.  Dynamics is a core discipline within Mechanical Engineering and has strong connections with Solid & Fluid Mechanics, Continuum Mechanics, and most aspects of Control. It is also fundamentally important for other branches of engineering, including Civil, Electrical, Biomedical, and Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering.

The successful candidate will have Dynamics as their core identity and (s)he will be expected to bring their own research interests and expertise to the School. Areas of national strategic importance related to Dynamics include research on energy conversion devices, especially using waves and tidal sources; energy harvesting; novel machining and manufacturing devices, including ultrasonic surgical and cutting equipment; active vibration control; and the design of medical devices. In addition to interacting with staff and research groups outside UCD Engineering, such as in Physics (e.g. on space activities and instrument design), in Mathematical Sciences (e.g. on fluid-structure interactions), and in UCD’s CASL Institute (Complex and Adaptive Systems Laboratory), the ideal candidate will also play a major role in supporting the current research strengths within the School, such as:

  • Biomechanics, especially the dynamic aspects (e.g. gait analysis, accident reconstruction, impact biomechanics, joint, tissue and limb mechanics), robotics and assistive technology, prosthetic design, sports biomechanics and orthopaedic biomechanics;
  • Manufacturing and machining, including vibration control, automation and robotics;
  • Vibrations (e.g. control of structures, flexible mechanical systems and spacecraft);
  • Medical devices, especially for surgery and for computer assisted surgery;
  • Energy conversion and energy harvesting

Salary Scale: €50,807 - €76,936 per annum

Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines

Closing Date: 17:00 (GMT) on Friday, 27 November 2015.
