PhD and Master’s Positions in Civil and Materials Engineering at Howard University, Washington, DC
The Sustainable Infrastructure, Geotechnics, and Materials (SIGMa) Lab at Howard University, Washington, DC invites applicants for two PhD and one Master’s positions in geotechnical and materials engineering for Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. Highly-motivated, industrious individuals with strong computational and/or experimental skills, journal/conference publications, excellent English proficiency, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team are strongly encouraged to apply.
Required qualifications for position(s) in geotechnical engineering
Applicants must have a degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, or a related field. Ideal candidates should have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: computational geotechnics (especially numerical and centrifuge modeling of slopes, dams, and deep foundations), offshore geotechnics, computational solid mechanics (FEM and DEM), performance monitoring, data mining, optimization, risk analysis and assessment, and performance-based design.
Required qualifications for position(s) in materials engineering
Applicants must have a degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, bioengineering, or a related field. Ideal candidates should have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: multiscale modeling and simulation of materials, nanoscopic and microscopic characterization of composites, design of bio-inspired materials, programming, and data mining. Hands-on experience in additive manufacturing (3D printing) would be a plus.
Compensation package and contact information
Assistantships provide a monthly stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance. Interested individuals are encouraged to send their current CV and the contact information of three references to Dr. Hessam Yazdani at hessam.yazdani@howard.edu by June 25, 2016. Please put “Prospective graduate student in SIGMa” in the subject line.
About the SIGMa Lab
The interdisciplinary research at SIGMa is focused on fostering sustainability and resilience in civil infrastructure by developing high-performance and multifunctional construction materials, performance monitoring of structures using remote sensing and smart materials, addressing the geotechnical aspects of infrastructure, and incorporating uncertainty analysis and optimization into the analysis and design of interacting geotechnical and structural systems.
