Postdoc position in experimental biomechanics of the optic nerve head

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral candidate starting as soon as possible to study the mechanical behavior of the lamina cribrosa, the connective tissue of the optic nerve head. The lamina cribrosa forms a part of the eye-wall in the optic nerve head.  It serves to mechanically support the axons of the retinal ganglion cells as they exit the eye, and the blood vessels entering and exiting the optic nerve head. In glaucoma, a progressive blinding disease, the axons of the retinal ganglion cells are damaged at the lamina cribrosa and the connective tissue itself undergoes dramatic remodeling. The objective of this project is to measure the strain field in  the lamina cribrosa in response to pressure. My lab has developed a method that uses inflation testing, second harmonic generation imaging and digital volume correlation to acquire 3D volume images of the lamina cribrosa and analyze for strains.  The project is collaborative and interdisciplinary, and the postdoctoral scholar will interact regularly ophthalmologists. Additional duties include communicating research findings in collaborative meetings, reports, journal publications, and conferences. 

 

 

Qualifications: 

The candidate is required to have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering. Experience in biomechanics is desired.
