Dear Friends,

The 54th Annual Technical Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science (SES), a joint event with the Applied Mechanics Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, will be hosted by Northeastern University, on July 25-28, 2017 at its Boston campus. Please visit www.ses2017.org for more information!

As part of this meeting, we are organizing a symposium, “Dermal and Dermal Inspired Systems”.  The symposium aims to address recent experimental, computational, theoretical, and fabrication advances on mechanical structures, solids and surfaces of dermal systems or those broadly inspired from them. Due to the highly interdisciplinary nature of the symposium, we highly encourage participations encompassing diverse disciplines across physical sciences, engineering, and biology. The symposium is now open for abstract submission (SES2017.org).

Topics of particular interest include (but are not limited to) :

• Mechanics of scale, hair and other natural and bio-inspired morphologies in animals and plants

• Biofouling and self-cleaning characteristics at multiple length scales

• Mechanics of dermally inspired composites and metamaterials

• Indentation and puncture resistance

• Multifunctional behavior of dermal and dermally inspired systems including but not limited to biomechanical, thermal, water resistance and locomotive adaptation

• Biomimetic topographies for multi-functional materials

• Interfacial phenomena on bio-inspired surfaces

To submit an abstract, please visit http://ses2017.org and navigate to the Abstract Submission Portal and choose Symposium VI-A: Dermal and Dermal Inspired Systems. A general list of symposia on various topics  of interest can be found at  (http://www.northeastern.edu/ses2017/track-topics/).

Please use the abstract submission portal or the submit abstract button on the symposium webpage.

The deadline for abstract submission is April 15, 2017.

We look forward to your participation.
