Postdoctoral Research Associate in Impact Engineering – Composites, Experimentation for Aerospace Applications

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate in Impact Engineering to join a team of researchers focused on investigation of pressure and strain rate dependent behaviour of composite materials for high-performance aerospace applications within the Impact Engineering Team, an integral part of the Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering Group at the Department of Engineering Science (University of Oxford Begbroke Science Park). The post is funded by Innovate UK for a fixed-term of 1 year.

The project is a collaborative effort with researchers at Rolls-Royce plc in the context of developing a better understanding of composite materials subjected to rapidly applied loads. The research aims at exploiting existing approaches and developing novel methodologies for experimental characterization and numerical simulation of deformation and failure of rapidly loaded materials employed in the manufacturing of large civil aviation gas turbine engines. You will be responsible for the execution of experiments and the development of deterministic and probabilistic experimental and analytical simulation techniques aimed at predictive modelling of the response of materials to impact loading such as that imposed by bird strikes, the development of supporting experimental techniques, the writing of progress reports to sponsors and journal publications and the production of documented software and experimental procedures.

You should possess a PhD/DPhil (or be very near to completion) in engineering, materials science, mathematics, physics or a related discipline; or, alternatively, have a good first degree (or Masters) and significant relevant experience (with the possibility to underfill at Grade 6 (£28,098 - £33,418 p.a.) if candidate holds a relevant degree/Masters and is working on PhD/DPhil) together with relevant experience. Strong knowledge of the mechanical behaviour, deformation, damage and failure of composite materials for applications in aerospace, automotive or defence applications. Proven skills in novel research. Experience in experimental assessment of the deformation and failure of engineering materials subjected to dynamic loading. The ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience, both orally and in writing (including research papers for journals) and to industrial partners. Good knowledge of the mechanical behaviour, deformation, damage and failure of woven composite materials and the ability to develop experimental capability using LabView and Matlab softwares would be an advantage.
