Postdoc/PhD opening at UMich

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position and fully funded Ph.D. positions at the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in the general area of advanced manufacturing with an emphasis on dissimilar materials joining innovation and high-speed solid-state additive manufacturing. The research will serve as key enabler for high-volume production of next-generation multi-material lightweight structures in automobiles, trains, ships, and aircraft.  The high-speed solid-state additive manufacturing can produce high-quality materials and components with fully dense wrought microstructure with significantly reduced energy consumption than fusion-based processes. It has the potential to significantly advance human’s ability in metal manufacturing, joining, coating and crack repairs.

Qualifications for the postdoctoral position:

·         A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline

·         Background in physical metallurgy and advanced manufacturing

·         Experience with modern microstructure characterization instruments (EBSD, TEM, SEM, XPS, XRD) and its use in the study of crystalline materials

·         Hands-on physical research experience, especially in the areas of welding, additive manufacturing, casting, or thermomechanical deformation of materials

·         An excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals

·         Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers

·         Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs

Desired skills for postdoctoral position:

·         Experience using modeling & simulation codes such as Abaqus, AutoCAD, Python, or similar

·         Experience with processing monitoring and diagnostics

·         Familiarity with engineering drawings, dimensioning, and tolerance

Qualifications for Ph.D. position

·         Having a bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related disciplines

·         Relevant course work and experience on materials processing, microstructure characterization

·         Strong willingness and capability to conduct experimental research independently after training

·         Strong analytical skills and intellectual independence and the ability to transfer theoretical knowledge to practical situations

Desired skills for Ph.D. position

·         Experience using modeling and simulation codes such as Abaqus, AutoCAD, Python, LabVIEW or similar

·         Prior research experience with solid-state material processing, welding or materials

·         Having a graduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related disciplines

If you are interested, please send your Resume/CV and supplementary documents to Prof. Pingsha Dong (dongp@umich.edu) and Dr. Fengchao Liu (liufc@umich.edu). Screening of applications will continue until the position is filled.
