Five PhD scholarships (36 months) are available within the project LIGHTEN, funded through the H2020 program: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Innovative Training Networks – European Industrial Doctorate.

The project aims to address the incomplete scientific and technological understanding of the mechanical response of structural skins employed in novel ultralightweight membrane structures with enhanced energy efficiency and resilience. Experimental characterisation, modelling, numerical simulation, data-driven and structural design will constitute the education of the Early Stage Researchers within an integrated doctoral program supervised by industrial and academic partners.

Each scholarship is unique, has different recruiting institutions and advisors. The recruited Early Stage Researchers (ESR) will start on the 1st of May 2021 and will spend at least 18 months in industry.

The individual research projects are:

  1. ESR 1: Nonlinear thermomechanical response and constitutive modelling of viscoelastic building skins @ UCL (UK) – secondments at CAEmate (IT) and SBP (DE). For more information, visit the ESR1 advert. To apply, visit this website.
  2. ESR 2: The onset of plasticity in structural membranes @ CAEmate (IT) – secondments at UCL (UK) and SBP (DE). The ESR will be enrolled in UCL Mechanical Engineering PhD program. For more information and how to apply, visit the ESR2 advert.
  3. ESR 3: Thermoviscoplastic models of thin films for lightweight tension structures @ Tensys (UK) and TU Delft (NL) – secondment at University of Trento (IT). The ESR will be enrolled in TU Delft PhD program. For more information and how to apply, visit the ESR3 advert.
  4. ESR 4: Instabilities in structural membranes under extreme conditions @ University of Trento (IT) – secondments at Tensys (UK) and SBP (DE). For more information and how to apply, visit the ESR4 advert.
  5. ESR5: Data-driven design and optimisation of building skins and lightweight structures @ TU Delft (NL) – secondments at CAEmate (IT), and Tensys (UK). For more information, visit the ESR5 advert. To apply, visit this website.

Please note that each position has a different deadline in January 2021.
