Stickiness of randomly rough surfaces with high fractal dimension: is there a fractal limit?

Submitted by Mike Ciavarella on

dear Colleagues

we recently submitted this paper which discusses the "theoretical limit" or "fractal limit" of stickiness, and we found that BAM theory seems in agreement with the elegant theory of Barber and collaborators using the full Lennard-Jones description of van der Waals forces, and NOT in agreement with Persson-Tosatti,which is extremely simple, but its approximations become very strong and misleading at high fractal dimensions.   Any comments are welcome.
To really have a final word on this problem, we need simulations much broader than what Mueser used in his "contact challenge".

Regards, MIKE
