Post Doctoral Researcher in Computational Solid Mechanics

Applications are invited for a post doctoral researcher in computational solid mechanics.

The successful candidate will be part of a team working on the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded frontiers of the future project: Physically-based mOdelling of bainitiC and martensitiC steels for flExible and Sustainable power generation and diStribution (PrOCCESS). This project aims to develop multi-scale, physically-based models of deformation and failure in bainitic/martensitic steels, providing explicit links between nano/microstructure and mechanical behaviour of materials. The overall goal is for increased sustainability of engineering components through an improved understanding of material behaviour at the nano/microstructure level, providing optimised nano/microstructures and more accurate design and life prediction tools.

A post-doctoral researcher with an in-depth knowledge of numerical methods in solid mechanics, particularly the finite element method applied to the study of non-linear deformation of metals is required. The use of phase-field methods to predict microstructure evolution and discrete dislocation techniques to examine deformation at the sub-micron length scale are also expected to be important. Applicants should have an appropriate publication record in the field of computational solid mechanics and have an interest in experimental techniques in engineering. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Engineering, or Materials Science and at least two publications in high impact journals in the area of computational solid mechanics applied to metallic materials. The successful candidate will also be expected to assist the project leader in the management of the project, industry liaison, supervision of students and development of new research proposals.

Further information for applicants available on: (ref: 045068)

The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday, 16th July 2021.

Applications must be completed online before 12 noon, Irish Standard Time on the closing date.
