Ph.D. and/or postdoctoral positions in mechanics theory and experiment

 Applications are invited for Ph.D. (Spring or Fall 2022) and/or postdoctoral (ASAP) positions in the group of J. Hanna in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno.  We are a theoretically oriented group that also engages in experimental work, with broad general interests in classical mechanics and applied geometry (see cmag.neocities.org ).  We are fully in-person-operational.

Possible topics include:

-Selective modification of dynamical systems (see journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.127.134101 ) with application to fluids, flight/tumbling and other fluid-structure problems, integrable PDEs, etc. (theory)

-New elastic models of shells and strips (see www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2001262 and journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10812865211022417 ) (theory)

-Patterns in thin elastic sheets, including fast propagation of indentations, and dynamic wrinkling in contact with curved surfaces with application to web handling/manufacturing/materials processing (experiment and theory)

-Snapping and related phenomena in tether-payload systems (experiment).

-Pseudomomentum in continuum and structural mechanics (see link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00033-021-01507-9 ) with application to fracture, waves, etc. (theory)

-Ideas suggested by applicant.  I am particularly open to proposed experimental science by a postdoc.  Areas of interest beyond those listed above include soft matter, pattern formation and front propagation, water entry, multistable structures, rolling dynamics, cable dynamics, and anything to do with the evolving or static shapes of things.
