We have new openings for PhD students –fully funded - in the Laboratory of Advanced Materials and Bioinspiration at The University of Colorado Boulder, starting Fall 2022 or earlier.
Our research group is currently exploring new material architectures that expand the properties and functionalities of traditional engineering materials. We currently have research projects that explore the mechanics of assembly, deformation and failure of architectured materials based on building blocks and grains, and projects that explore the mechanics of shape morphing in biological materials and bioinspired robotic materials.
This research involves micromechanics, fracture mechanics, finite elements modeling, discrete element modeling, design optimization, 3D printing and mechanical testing.
Required background: Mechanics of materials, experimental mechanics and/or computational solid mechanics.
Preferred but not required: Background in materials science, fracture mechanics, composites materials, granular physics or biomechanics.
