PhD and Postdoc positions in Active-Metamaterials at the University of Missouri


Structured Materials & Dynamics Laboratory ( at the University of Missouri seeks exceptional Postdoc scientists and PhD scholars to work closely with our research group on exciting research in architecture materials, topological metamaterials, active elastic metamaterials embedded with sensing, actuating and control for manipulating mechanical wave propagation, structural energy materials, mechanical energy and topological applications.

We develop innovative solutions for Solid Mechanics and Structured Materials, in particular the new frontiers of structural dynamics, wave propagation, micromechanics, topological and quantum mechanics, smart materials and dynamical behaviours of multi-functional materials, both man-made and formed naturally, and understanding relationship between microstructures and material macroscopic properties. Many of the former Ph.D. students and postdocs have received tenured or tenure-track faculty positions at various research universities.

The candidate should be self-motivated, independent and willing to work in a multidisciplinary team. The postdoc position is immediately available for one year with competitive salary and could be renewed for the multiple years.

Essential Duties:

She/he will:

·         Model and characterize active and self-aware metamaterials for advance of active elasticity, multifunctional sensing and biomedical applications.

·         Employ Machine learning for unprecedented wave control in passive and active metamaterials.

·         Participate in leading-edge research involving multi-physical dynamic simulation and control theory of active metamaterials and topological metamaterials or metastructures for elastic/acoustic wave steering and control.

·         Study Topological mechanics of structural metamaterials with zero modes.

·         Study reconfigurable acoustic metamaterials for noise control and mitigation.

·         Model microstructural designs of multi-functional metamaterials for energy harvesting, vibration control, shock wave mitigation and thermal management.


Required qualifications include:

Master or PhD in an area related to structure dynamics, acoustic/elastic metamaterials, electric circuits or a related field;

Solid background of solid mechanics, piezoelectric materials, active control, multiscale modeling;

Expertise in ANSYS, COMSOL and other numerical simulations;

Experimental experience is a plus.
