PhD (Fall 2022) and Postdoc (available immediately) openings in mechanics and materials

Ruobing Bai's picture

Multiple positions are available in the Bai group (https://sites.google.com/view/ruobingbai) in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University. You are welcome to send email to Prof. Ruobing Bai (ru.bai@northeastern.edu) for further information about undergraduate research, PhD, postdoc, and visiting student/scholar. Please indicate your anticipated starting time.

PhD position

We have opening for one fully funded PhD position for Fall 2022 in the broad area of mechanics and/or materials. Research will be focused on the combination of theory and experiment.

Postdoc position

We have opening for one fully funded postdoc position available immediately. We are looking for candidates with expertise in polymer chemistry, polymer physics, and/or theoretical/experimental mechanics. Experiences in synthesis, characterization, fabrication, manufacturing, and modeling of soft polymeric materials are particularly preferred.

Undergraduate, master, and visiting student/scholar for research

We have an active group of undergraduate and master students who are undertaking research projects in the group. New students and visiting scholars are always welcome to join our group. For students in Northeastern, a course of “Independent Study” (for undergrads) or Master Thesis (for masters) is strongly encouraged. Please contact Prof. Ruobing Bai (ru.bai@northeastern.edu) for further information and possible one-on-one discussion.

The Bai group: Dr. Ruobing Bai is an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University. He received his BS in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at Peking University in 2012, and PhD in Engineering Sciences at Harvard University in 2018. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering at California Institute of Technology from 2018 to 2020. Research in the Bai group aims to combine theory and experiment in solid mechanics, soft active materials, large deformation, fracture and adhesion, multiphysics, and instability of materials. Applications include soft machines and robots, sustainable materials, human health, human-machine interfaces, human augmentation, and biohybrid machines. The group has a strong background of theoretical modeling as well as modern laboratory facilities for material synthesis, fabrication, and characterization.

About Northeastern University: Northeastern University is a private research university in Boston, Massachusetts, established in 1898. It is ranked by US News in 2022 as #31 in Best Graduate Engineering School, #49 in National Universities, and #1 in Best Co-op/Internships. The University currently has an increasing research investment and grows rapidly. The famous Co-op program by connecting students with industrial companies also make Northeastern graduates very attractive in the industrial job market. Students at Northeastern have the great opportunity to build connections with neighboring universities such as Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Boston College, Tufts University, Brandeis university, and so on. The city of Boston is a major center of education, biomedical, IT, and other high technology industries in the United States.
