Spirit of St. Louis Lecture by Darold B. Cummings

Cummings for the Spirit of St. Louis Medal on Friday, January 28 11-12PM EST. Please register in advance to receive the Zoom login credentials. We will also recognize the ASME/Boeing Structures and Materials Award winners: Trenton M. Ricks, Evan J. Pineda, Brett A. Bednarcyk, and Steven M. Arnold for their paper entitled Progressive Failure Analysis of 3D Woven Composites via Multiscale Recursive Micromechanics (AIAA-2021-0702).

Mr. Cummings' award lecture is entitled "Adventures in Aerospace: Five Decades of Discovery". This lecture covers Mr. Cummings' 50+ years in aerospace Advanced Air Vehicle Design. The first 35 years were as an employee of three aerospace companies, and the last 17 years as a consultant with his own business. Included are a broad range of aircraft projects in both the commercial and military fields that range from paper concepts to prototype development and flight test. Aircraft types include military jet trainers, fighters, bombers, transports, reusable unmanned space plane, commercial airliners, and STOL aircraft. Three of these aircraft are currently in museums, and two have his name on them. The presentation covers both the technical aspects of design projects and the political reality of program decisions.
